SWWA 2024 Conference & Trade Show
Thursday November 7, 2024 9:15am - 10:15am PST
Does filter media such as anthracite and sand have a shelf life or an expiry date? The
short answer is no. In this presentation, we’ll dissect the myth that the media in your filters
needs to be changed after so many years in service. Is changing the filter media a good
idea based on time alone?

We will discuss examples and review case studies that illustrate when and why the media
in your filters should be changed or updated. We’ll look at things that can shorten (or
lengthen) the lifespan of the media in your filters. When/why it’s a good idea (or maybe
not so good of an idea) to change the media. And allowing the data from your operating
filters to guide the way and formulate a plan for filter media maintenance or possible
replacement.

In this presentation, laboratory studies will be presented along with full scale data from
plants that have been operating for many years. We will look at times when filter media
attrition was found to be occurring and other times where it was thought to be occurring!
Times when media replacement was justified, and other times when it was not.

Attendees of this presentation will come away with information that will help guide their
decision when it comes time to look at the media in their filters. They will understand the
information required to make a decision regarding why (or why not) to replace the media
in their filters.
